This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
